Ski Mountaineering

Weekly Trip

First the ascent with ski-skins over an altitude gradient of several hundred metres, then the sweet descent through the powdery snow; all categories are available, from Telemark to Alpine skiing.

Participants will have a chance to increase their experience regarding technical skills, risk management and self-rescue (if more than one trip is planned, a special evening will be dedicated to elaborating on safety procedures, avalanche risk and rescue with the aid of transceivers).

Organization:

Minimum 3-4 participants.

When

From the end of December through to March depending on weather and snow conditions.

Where

Dolomites in general, Adamello, Lagorai, Fleres Valley, Brenner Pass, Ridanna Valley, Sarntal Alps, Ortler Group, Stubai Alps etc..

N.B. Before venturing out on glaciers it is advised to attend the course on crevasse rescue operations.

Equipment

Ski helmet (or climbing/cycling helmet), mountaineering skis, hinged bindings, adjustable trekking poles, climbing skins, thermos flask, dry fruit and energy bars, first aid kit with heat-retaining foil blanket, 18-22l backpack, avalanche airbag (ABS), harness, lanyard and avalanche safety kit (transceiver, probe and snow shovel).

What to wear

Long sleeved/legged undergarments (arms and legs) possibly in fleece or microfiber, fleece or Polartech top with high collar, softshell or waterproof pants, anorak or windbreaker, down or synthetic jacket and light and thick gloves, sunglasses or snow goggles, sun cream with high UV protection.

Crossings

Multi-day trips with snow under foot and the sky above, with skis and climbing skins from one mountain hut or bivouac to another, crossing glaciers and ascending various peaks along the way.

Organization:

Minimum 3-4 participants.

When

Winter and spring, depending on weather and snow conditions.

Where

Lagorai, the Dolomites, Adamello group, Senales Valley, Ortler Group, Gran Paradiso, Mont Blanc, Monte Rosa, Zermatt , Oberland, Tauren range (Monti Tauri).

N.B. Before venturing out on glaciers it is advised to attend the course on crevasse rescue operations.

Ski helmet (or climbing/cycling helmet), mountaineering skis, hinged bindings, adjustable trekking poles, climbing skins, 35-40l backpack, thermos flask, dry fruit and energy bars, first aid kit with heat-retaining foil blanket, harness, lanyard, avalanche safety kit (transceiver, probe and snow shovel), crampons, ice-axe.

What to wear

Long sleeved/legged undergarments (arms and legs) possibly in fleece or microfiber, fleece or Polartech top with high collar, softshell or waterproof pants, anorak or windbreaker, down or synthetic jacket and light and thick gloves, sunglasses or snow goggles, sun cream.
